The tax is not deducted at sale; you pay it when you file your return.

Listed shares sold within 12 months, with STT paid, are short-term capital gains, taxed at 20% plus 4% cess for tax year 2026-27. This tax is not cut when you sell: the full sale amount (minus brokerage, STT and other charges) reaches your account, and you pay the tax yourself as advance tax or when you file your income tax return. Your actual tax can be lower or higher depending on your total income, losses you can set off and surcharge. This is a simple estimate, not tax advice.

An illustration only, using the numbers you enter. It is not a forecast of any price and not tax advice. STT, stamp duty, brokerage, exchange charges, surcharge and your own tax situation are not included, so your actual result will differ.

How it's calculated

Amount blocked = lots × shares per lot × the upper end of the price band. Bidding at cut-off blocks this amount; if the final price is lower, the difference is released.

Maximum retail lots = the largest whole number of lots whose amount stays within ₹2 lakh. Bids above ₹2 lakh up to ₹10 lakh are small NII; above ₹10 lakh, big NII. UPI can be used for bids up to ₹5 lakh.

Sale illustration: gain = shares × (your sale price − issue price). Short-term capital gains tax on listed shares sold within 12 months is 20%, plus 4% cess on that tax, applied only to a gain. STT, stamp duty, brokerage, surcharge and your own tax situation are not included.

Questions

What price should I enter for the sale?

Any price you want to try. The calculator does not predict or suggest a listing or sale price; it only shows what a sale at the price you type would mean.

Why is my bid category not retail?

Retail individual investors can bid up to ₹2 lakh in a mainboard IPO. Above that, an individual's bid is in the non-institutional (NII) category, which has its own allotment rules.

Is the tax figure exact?

No. It is a simple estimate at the short-term capital gains rate plus cess. Surcharge, losses you can set off, STT and other charges change the real figure. Check with a tax professional for your own case.
